Classes of 1966 and 1967

September 14, 15, 2007

The Class of 1966 and the Class of 1967 held a fabulously successful event over three days in September.  The Friday night cocktail party was a hit, despite the fact that the hotel decided to tear out all the carpet in the hallway leading to the room, and replace it.  More than one person walked through the fresh glue before they got the new carpet down.  Also, the hotel forgot to get a bartender in place, so everyone had to behave for the beginning of the event until the bar opened late.  No problem—the classes made up for it later.

Saturday we had a picnic at Lake Fairfax with beautiful weather, just cool enough to feel like fall.  With many tables spread out under the pavilion tent, there was plenty of room to sit and chat with groups of friends in a very relaxed setting.  That was certainly the best place to have those long catch-up conversations.

But Saturday night the party got rolling again back at the Courtyard Marriott with the MHS alumni DJ, and a nice spread of food.  This time the bar was set up, many of the guests knew where everything was, the carpet was securely back in place and the glue pots put away (no sniffing!), and the food warm and tasty.  We paused to recognize those who had travelled the furthest (Vera Cruz, Mexico was just edged out as the longest distance!)  The professional photographer on hand captured the official ’66 class picture and the one for ’67, as well as small group and candid shots.  The amateurs burned through a lot of memory cards, too, that night!  The dancers danced, the talkers talked, and the drinkers drank!  It was a high energy, noisy celebration of life!

Sunday morning the survivors got together for breakfast, or took off for various unplanned small group events around town.

We billed this as the LAST CHANCE REUNION because none of the ’66 or ’67 organizers plan to do another one, but it was such a hit that the talk immediately started about the next one.  So, if you want to organize the 50th in 2017, feel free to step up and get it rolling!  There are plenty of people who want to do it again!  Feel free to contact Jeff Cochran (’66), or Paul Barkley (’67), both of whom are now officially retired from reunion planning!

Class of 1982

November 17, 2007

The Class of 1982 held their 25th reunion the weekend of November 17, 2007.  The reunion started with a gathering at eCitie in Tyson's Corner on Friday night.  The showing from the Class of 1982 was excellent.  We didn't keep count but there were at least 70 alumni on Friday and they were successful in closing the place and then moving the party to a local hotel room and we understand, called it quits around 4 am.

Saturday morning, a "ladies only" breakfast was held.  There were about 20 or so in attendance and everyone enjoyed the low-key environment and shared lots of stories and updates on what they have been up to since 1982.

The main event at the Sheraton Tyson's on Saturday had approximately 110 classmates (135 including significant others) signed up and we exceeded that with many walk-ins.  The evening started at 7 pm with cocktails adjacent to the indoor pool followed by a buffet dinner and music until 1 am.  Several awards were given for most marriages, most kids and travelled farthest to attend the reunion.  People came from AR, CA, CT, FL, GA, IA, LA, NC, NJ, NY, OH, TX, UT, VA, and WA as well as many from the DC Metro area.  The music stopped at 1 am and we moved to the hospitality suite.  Despite being a little loud we weren't thrown out.  The majority of the 50 people in the suite didn't leave until 4 am.  However, we understand that a few made it until 6 am and beyond!  Unbelievable!!!

Between the Friday and Saturday events, about one-third of the graduating class participated.  As we were planning the event, we were able to verify the whereabouts of about 55% of the class.  We aren't sure we know where the other 45% is.  We mailed invitations in two waves, worked the phones and even paid for access to a database to search people out.  We apologize if you weren't aware of the events but the data on some classmates is dated and inaccurate.  If you have not been in contact with the alumni association or the Class of 1982 25th Reunion planners in 2007, please send an updated mailing address, phone and email to mhs82reunion@verizon.net.  We'll get you updated and as long as you don't move (or provide another update) in the next 5 or 10 years, you should be good to go for the next reunion.

If you want to stay tuned into your Class of 1982 classmates and catch up on what everyone has been sharing about themselves, up to and including the 25th reunion (pictures included), please sign up at groups.yahoo.com/group/McLeanHS82/  Your access will be screened but once granted you'll be able to really converse with your classmates in an access controlled area.

Class of 1987

October 6, 2007

On 6th October, 2007, the McLean Class of 1987 celebrated its 20th reunion at the Crystal City Hyatt in Arlington, Virginia.  The reunion weekend was over a year in planning and 15 years since the last reunion.

We started off the reunion weekend on Friday morning with some classmates hitting a local golf course and playing 18 holes.

That evening we had a Happy Hour at Broad Street Tavern in Falls Church. Others went out in smaller groups to dinner or dancing.

The reunion itself was a huge success. We had 116 attend out of 330 in our graduating class, many traveling from all over the US and even a few from Europe.

At the reunion classmates enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres, a pasta station and cash bar all while catching up with one another and enjoying music from a DJ.

Debbie Strom (Goodrich) led the compilation of a slide show which featured video footage from the Senior Talent Show and Graduation as well as candid classmate photos from elementary school through high school.

David Maxwell provided memorabilia including a journal of signatures from 6th grade!

Special recognition must also go to Gaye Nail-Lins who created a webpage for classmates to get in touch, share news and photos.  For anyone not yet registered go to: mcleanhigh87@yahoogroups.com and send a request to Gaye to join.

A special thanks to everyone who came out and to those that didn't, we missed you!!

Class of 1976

July 28-30, 2006

The Class of 1976 held their 30th reunion the weekend of July 28, 2006 with a casual-dress event at the Holiday Inn at Tyson's Corner.  Friday and Saturday nights were in the tent in the courtyard, and approximately 60 people attended, many from out of town.  The Friday night happy hour lasted from 8 to 11 p.m., and the Saturday night all you can eat Italian buffet dinner and party were held from 8 to 1 a.m.  On Sunday the class had a breakfast brunch in O'Malley's, the hotel's restaurant, with additional people attending who weren’t able to come to the other events.  The class was very pleased with the food and service at the Holiday Inn, and everyone had a wonderful time catching up with classmates.  Those classmates who were able to come were friendly, happy to be there, and fun to be around!  Even the weather was very cooperative, too....strangely, so. Several people reported driving through rain storms in McLean, but the storm veered off at Tyson's, and there was no rain at the reunion, not even a drizzle. It was hot...but then it was the end of July, so that stands to reason!  A great event!  Information provided by Jo Ann Weiss Gardner.

2000 First Annual Turkey Trot Multi-Class Reunion, November 24, 2000

After talking about holding an annual multi-class event the Friday after Thanksgiving, the alumni association committee finally opted for a last minute, casual affair this year, dubbing it the First Annual Turkey Trot Multi-Class Reunion! Because of the short notice, we mailed postcards to all the alumni addresses we had on file for Virginia, Maryland, and DC, and in addition sent email to all the email addresses on file.

We met at eCiti, a new hot spot Cafe and Bar in the Tysons Corner area. About 500 alumni showed up, a better than expected turnout on short notice, and soon clumped into year groups around the various bars and seating areas for the requisite chit chat. Starting at 6 p.m., the number of people and the noise level grew throughout the evening until the DJ kicked off the dancing around 9:00 with hot music from the decades. The alumni committee judged the event a big success, and vowed to organize next year's event well in advance!

2000 Class of 1960 40th reunion, September 16, 2000

The Class of 1960 held their Fortieth Reunion in October 1997 with the Classes of 1957, 1958, and 1959! But there was another reunion in 2000. Waiting for information from the reunion coordinators!

2000 Class of 1970 30th reunion, July 21-23, 2000

Friday evening, we had 35 alumni meet informally at Mr. Smiths' at the Plaza 7 shopping center.

Saturday, our golf outing at Algonkian Regional Park was attended by 8 golfers.

Saturday evening, our formal dance was held at the Westpark Tyson's Hotel, attended by 70 alumni. A short program was mc'd by Steve Loranger, featuring a special presentation by Alton Byers on his life's work in conserving and preserving the global mountain habitats.

Sunday, a family picnic was held in the senior court of our high school.

2000 Class of 1980 20th reunion, August 5, 2000

The weekend started with a Happy Hour at the poolside of the Dulles Hyatt in Herndon. About 50 people showed up for that.

Saturday night's reunion was held at the Dulles Hyatt. The attendance was about 100 classmates. We voted on who has been married the longest to their high school sweetheart, the most children, the most buffed, etc.......

The next day's picnic was held at Woody's Golf Range in Herndon. Rain Or Shine!!! And we showed our spirit with the Rain. JJ Deli (a classmate's business) located in the Herndon Centennial Golf Course catered the event. Then a few of us went over to JJ Deli to continue the last bit of the reunion weekend.

The Reunion Commitee was: Seileen Mullen Murphy, Jackie Carrera Johnson, Mark Hansan, Kim Vajita Murphy, Patty Nelson, and Ian Gibson-Smith.

1997 Class of 1967 30th reunion, November 1st

The Class of 1967 attended the current Homecoming events including a tour of the high school at noon and the football game, and met up with one another in the Alumni Gathering Room during the game, where the various yearbooks were consulted. Various spontaneous events broke out Saturday during the day as alumni arrived from all over the country, and revisited sites memorable to the class, such as McDonald's, where everyone backed in, something not allowed in 1967!

At 6 pm, the class met at Evans Farm Inn in McLean, and caught up with one another while munching on the buffet. Billed as a low key, let it all hang out affair, the class had no speeches or other planned program, but Rick Dennen (CA), Dicky Moore (OR), and Jerry Kieling (NJ) took over the mike for an impromptu a capella satire of "Barbara Ann", a favorite hallway activity in 1967. Later, as the DJ cranked up the music, the dancing started and the party continued. Although this was a small reunion, only 56 people, everyone connected with their friends and had a great time! When our room reservation was up at 11 pm, the party continued in the pub, and when that closed, it moved on again; events after that time are classified and on a need to know basis only.

1997 Homecoming, November 1st

The McLean Alumni and Friends Association set up a school tour at noon, similar to the one that was so successful back in 1995. We hope to make this an annual event. This year, however, it started from the same area as a planned tour in support of the school millage, so the Class of 1967, present in strength because of their 30th reunion, abducted some of those guides and took off. The guides didn't need to stress how badly the school needs renovation, because many of the labs and other rooms looked pretty much like they did back in 1967!

The weather did not cooperate, and the parade at 2 pm was rained out, much to everyone's disappointment. But the floats looked great and McLean beat some other school by a score of something to something... details are a little murky at the present, and the athletic office isn't answering their phone. The main office doesn't seem to remember the game, either, but if someone sends us some email we'll update the information.

We spent all our time in the alumni gathering room, where we had all the yearbooks from 1957 to 1997 on display for alumni to look over along with some other memorabilia. There were free cookies, candy (well, it was the day after Halloween, you know), and soft drinks, and a number of alumni dropped by to chat and get out of the rain. We sold Christmas tree ornaments and tee shirts, and had sign up sheets so alumni could let others know they were there at the game. This is the first year that we had the alumni gathering room, and we expect to make it an annual affair.

After the game, current students got ready for their Homecoming dance, and the alumni went over to a local bar and restaurant for an open mixer. In all, it was a super day for catching up with old friends, even with the rain!

Class Events in 1996

Class of 1966 Thirtieth Reunion

Around a hundred people attended the 30th reunion last year, but we're waiting for the details to come in...

Class of 1976 Twentieth Reunion

The class of '76 had a very successful 20th reunion on July 26-28, 1996. Despite being held the same time as the Atlanta Summer Olympics (which several classmates elected to go to instead...shocking!), and following on the heels of the McFAC and a still-contested Classes of '75 and '76 combo reunion just a few months earlier, we still had about 250 people in attendance.

The theme, which was praised to the skies, was casual and informal. No fancy, seated dinners for the Bicentenntial Class. We made a weekend of it: a Friday Night Happy Hour (that stretched into hours, actually) at Kilroy's in Springfield, owned and managed by McLean alums. Between 75-100 people attended this free event, and Kilroy's went all out for us. Saturday's main event was at the Ballston Holiday Inn, with food stations of finger foods to encourage milling about and socializing, along with a very much appreciated open bar for the first few hours. Our DJ played specially requested songs. Again, the theme was casual, with folks wearing jeans, shorts, sundresses, and whatever they wanted. No monkey suits for the guys. On Sunday, we had a picnic at Splashdown Waterpark in Manassas, with our own covered pavilion, and an all-you-can-eat catered picnic of hot dogs and hamburgers. Softball, volleyball, horseshoes, and socializing were the order of the day. Those with energy left over used the discount coupons to go into the really cool waterpark, where several of us were the last guests to leave. Nearly 100 adults and 50 or so children attended this event.

The chair for the 20th reunion was Jo Ann Weiss, ably assisted by Mary Melley Blissard, Terri George Morris, Whit Rinaldo, Warren Whitley, Peggy Judd Mayhew, Karla Lutz Yocum, Cecilia Tejada, and Lisa Karlowicz Halsted.

McLean Band Reunion

The McLean Band program provided many students with unique opportunities and special friendships. At McLean High School's 1996 Homecoming, some MHS Band Alumni were able to meet, march in the parade, play with current band members and reminisce about the days we marched at McLean. The following day, some 50 MHS Band Alum, friends, spouses and family met for an informal cookout. We had a great time!

Since I graduated in 1982 there has only been one other time alumni band members have met. In 1985 a "Band BBQ" was held at Nottoway Park in Vienna. I had a great time and wished the reunions would be more frequent. With the new standing alumni organization and the ability to reach band alumni directly through the Internet, we need to start organizing to meet more regularly than every 10 years.

The band program has changed significantly over the years. They purchased new uniforms a couple of years ago (over $10,000), lost funding to go to away games and, on the positive side, have filled the band room with numerous trophies. The program still has great pride and I would like to see more interaction between alumni and the current program.

Last year's Homecoming Game/MHS Band Alumni event is what I hope is the start of many more events where we can keep in touch. Due to limited funding, last year's MHS Band Alumni event included only 1978-1984 graduating years. Building a data base of band members is very difficult since the only records maintained by the band are from 1982 to present. Looking through yearbooks and our memories helped reconstruct 1978-1982 data. More research would be needed to find band participants before 1978.

If you're interested in being contacted by email or regular mail please email me and provide some details about your graduating year and what you did in the band (instrument, flags, drill team, etc.) and any leads on other band alumni. Spread the word...it would be great to see/meet more people at the 1997 Homecoming Game. An official Band Alumni mailing will be sent sometime in August detailing the plans for Homecoming. Email me with ideas or suggestions. I hope to hear from MHS Band Alumni soon!  Information from Paul Torpey, MHS '82.
